How to Plan a Farm Wedding in Hendersonville, NC
Hendersonville sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains, a short drive from Asheville, which makes it one of the easiest places in Western North Carolina to host a wedding with real mountain views and room to spread out. If you are picturing open pastures, a pond, old barns and the sun setting over the ridgeline, a farm wedding may be exactly what you are looking for. Here is how to plan one, step by step, using our own Thornhill Farm as the example.
1. Start with your guest count
Your guest count shapes everything else: tent size, table layout, parking and catering. Thornhill Farm comfortably hosts up to 200 guests for ceremonies, receptions and celebrations, so most couples have room to invite everyone on their list. Get a rough number first, then build the rest of the plan around it.
2. Plan the whole day, not just the ceremony
At Thornhill Farm the entire estate is yours from 11am to 11pm on your wedding day, and we can talk about more time if your wedding party needs it to get ready. That leaves space for every part of the day without rushing. A sample timeline:
11am: Arrive and start hair and makeup in the farmhouse getting ready quarters
3pm: First look and wedding party photos by the barns and the stone wall
5pm: Ceremony
5:30pm: Cocktail hour on the wrap around porch, with rocking chairs and a swing
6:30pm: Dinner, toasts and dancing
10:30pm: Send off
3. Pick your ceremony spot
Thornhill Farm has several ceremony sites across the property, from open fields to the edge of the pond, all with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance. Our tip: tour the farm at the same time of day you plan to say "I do," so you can see where the light falls.
4. Have a weather plan
Mountain weather can change quickly in any season. An optional tent setup is available at Thornhill Farm, and we recommend every outdoor couple talk through a tent plan early, even for a summer date.
5. Line up your caterer and vendors
Caterers get a prep kitchen on site. Folding tables (60 inch rounds or 8 foot rectangles) and padded chairs are available, along with decorative wood tables for your cake, gifts, guest book and memory table. Need help building your team? Our vendor list includes local planners, caterers, florists, DJs and even a bluegrass band.
6. Think about your guests
There is a parking area for 50 cars and a parking attendant on your wedding day. For a big guest list, encourage carpools or book a shuttle from the hotels in town. Downtown Hendersonville and Flat Rock are a 5 to 15 minute drive, and the farmhouse on the property sleeps 8 to 10, which is perfect for the couple or the wedding party. Our lodging and local attractions guide lists hotels and favorite places to eat.
7. Use the whole farm for photos
The farm gives you acres of photo spots: weathered barns, the pond, open fields, wild grasses and flowers, and a stone wall. The barns make a beautiful backdrop, but guests stay outside them because the old structures are not stable. Engagement, save the date and bridal portrait sessions are welcome too, as availability permits.
